Clicker Heroes is the game that turned “click a monster, earn gold, hire a hero” into a genre-defining formula. It starts you off clicking monsters by hand — then hands the work over to a growing roster of heroes who fight automatically, even while you’re offline. The pull is watching your damage numbers compound: every hero you hire and upgrade earns gold faster, which buys stronger heroes, which unlocks tougher zones with better rewards, on and on through more than 1,000 zones. Layer in boss fights, active abilities, and an Ascension system that trades your current run for permanent power, and you get a game that’s easy to start, hard to put down, and genuinely deep once the resets begin. This is the original web version, playable free in your browser.

What Is Clicker Heroes?

Clicker Heroes was released by Playsaurus in July 2014, arriving in the wake of Cookie Clicker and refining that idea into something with combat, characters, and a real long-term structure. Where Cookie Clicker built an economy around baked goods, Clicker Heroes built one around monster-slaying: cute, colorful enemies with health bars, gold that bursts out of every kill, and a mercenary roster that grows from a lone clicking cursor into an army.

Its influence on the genre is hard to overstate — the wave of hero-based idle games that followed all borrow its skeleton. The specific structure it popularized: zones of ten monsters each, a boss every five levels, heroes with individual DPS values and upgrade paths, and a prestige loop (Ascension) that converts a finished run into permanent currency. The game found a massive audience on the web, then expanded to Android, iOS, and Steam (since May 2015), and received updates for years — the last one landed on September 6, 2022. What you’re playing here is the original browser build: the full game with heroes, bosses, 1,000+ zones, and ascension intact.

How to Play Clicker Heroes

Everything is mouse-driven — click to fight, click to manage heroes and upgrades.

Controls

  • Mouse: Click monsters to damage them; click the hero panel to hire, level, and buy upgrades.
  • Touch: On mobile browsers, tapping does everything clicking does.

Start by clicking monsters. Each click deals a fixed amount of damage, and every kill drops gold. Your click damage can be upgraded, but clicking is only the opening act.

The real engine is your hero roster. Spend gold to recruit heroes who attack automatically — each one has its own DPS and its own upgrade path. Heroes get expensive fast, but the stronger ones carry you into new zones with much better gold drops. Once your team is rolling, gold flows in whether you click or not, and it keeps flowing while you’re away from the game.

Every fifth zone ends with a boss: more health, a timer’s worth of pressure, a real fight. If a boss stops you, drop back to the previous zone, farm gold, level your heroes, and come back stronger. That farm-and-return rhythm is the game’s heartbeat from zone 5 to zone 1,000.

Clicker Heroes Strategy Guide

Early Game

Your first hour is about escaping manual clicking. Hire every affordable hero and keep leveling them — even the cheap early ones matter, because hero levels unlock upgrades, and upgrades include the active abilities you’ll lean on later. The guiding principle from the very first purchase: chase damage-per-gold, not raw damage. Later heroes cost more but hit much harder, so before you spend, ask which purchase gives the most damage for the gold. That ratio is what keeps progress efficient across the whole run.

When a boss walls you, don’t bash your head against it. Farm earlier monsters for gold, upgrade your team, then return — it’s faster than repeated failed attempts, and the habit will serve you for the next thousand zones, because bosses arrive every five levels and the walls never stop coming.

Mid Game

By the mid zones, your DPS roster does the killing and your job becomes allocation. Keep buying whichever hero level or upgrade offers the best damage-per-gold, and start using your active abilities properly: each sits on a cooldown, and fired together they multiply each other. Save them for boss fights instead of burning them one at a time — a stacked ability combo can crack a boss that your raw DPS says you shouldn’t beat yet.

Let idle time do its share too. Your heroes keep earning while you’re offline, so if gold feels scarce, close the tab and come back to a stockpile. It’s a core mechanic, not cheating — the game is explicitly designed around it, like every good idle game.

Late Game / Prestige

Ascension is where Clicker Heroes reveals its real shape. Once you unlock the option, ascending resets your run in exchange for Hero Souls — permanent currency that opens new upgrade paths and makes every future run faster. The cardinal rule: don’t cling to a slow run. When progress stalls and farming feels like wading through mud, reset and snowball. Each ascension should reach further than the last in a fraction of the time.

Deeper still, the endgame becomes a resource-allocation puzzle around Ancients — powerful upgrades bought with Ancient Souls. Late-game progress comes down to picking the right heroes to max out and spending Ancient Souls wisely, more math than clicking contest. If you’re new to prestige mechanics and want to know when a reset is actually worth it, the prestige and ascension guide covers the reasoning that applies here perfectly.

Upgrades & Progression

Clicker Heroes runs on four stacked progression systems:

SystemCurrencyWhat it does
Hero levels & upgradesGoldCore DPS growth; unlocks active abilities
Click damageGoldKeeps manual clicks relevant alongside your roster
AscensionHero SoulsPermanent bonuses that persist across resets
AncientsAncient SoulsDeep endgame upgrades; the late-game puzzle

Gold is the fast loop: it resets on every Ascension and funds the moment-to-moment decisions. Hero Souls are the slow loop: each reset banks more of them, and their permanent bonuses are why a run that took a week the first time takes an afternoon the fifth. Ancients sit on top for players pushing seriously deep — choosing which to invest in is the closest the game gets to a build system. The elegance of the design is that all four layers answer the same question at different timescales: what’s the most damage this purchase can buy? Master that question at the gold level in your first run, and you’ll find the Hero Soul and Ancient layers are the same puzzle with bigger numbers and longer horizons.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Chase damage-per-gold, not raw damage. Before every purchase, ask which option buys the most damage for the price. That ratio is the whole game.
  2. Grind when bosses wall you. Farm earlier zones for gold, upgrade, and return. It beats repeated failed attempts every time.
  3. Stack your abilities. Fired together, active abilities multiply each other. Save the combo for bosses.
  4. Let idle time work for you. Heroes earn while you’re offline — a closed tab is a gold-farming strategy, not neglect.
  5. Ascend when progress stalls. A slow run is a signal, not a challenge. Reset for Hero Souls and snowball.
  6. Plan late game around Ancients. Deep runs are decided by Ancient Soul allocation and which heroes you choose to max.
  7. Export your save regularly. A daily backup is cheap insurance for a run you’ve spent weeks on (details below).
  8. Keep click upgrades ticking early. Clicking is the opening act, but a decent click damage line smooths the gaps before your roster takes over.

Saving Your Progress

Clicker Heroes lets you export your save so you never lose a long run to a cleared browser cache. Click the wrench icon in the top-right corner of the game, press “Save,” and choose where to store the file — it saves as a .txt document. To restore it on any device, open the file, copy the string inside, click the wrench icon in the game, press “Import,” and paste it in.

Save often. If your browser cache gets cleared, an unsaved run is gone. A fresh export once a day is cheap insurance. Dedicated players also use community tools — a save editor can modify a save file directly (useful for recovering lost progress), and calculators can crunch your stats to recommend which heroes to invest in and when to ascend.

FAQ

Who developed Clicker Heroes?

Playsaurus. The game launched in July 2014 and was last updated on September 6, 2022.

Is Clicker Heroes on PC?

Yes. Play it free in your browser right here, or download it via Steam, where it has been available since May 2015. Both versions include the full game — heroes, bosses, zones, and ascension.

Does Clicker Heroes ever end?

No — it’s built for endless progression. You advance through zones in cycles, and the Ascension mechanic resets your run in exchange for Hero Souls that make the next cycle stronger. There’s always a deeper zone.
